Energy Saving Tip 6

Take a shower rather than using the bathtub. Showering uses far less water and electricity.

HOT WATER METER - Single-jet Turbine

The application of systems in support of data collection has become more and more important in metering activities. With the ME4, the realization of a new versatile water meter for residential use able to be easily transformed any time in an advanced communicating device.

Meter Working Principle Extra Dry Technology

The meter combines the turbine single-jet technology with the proven reliability of the extra dry register.
No register parts are in contact with the water passing through the meter. Thanks to magnetic transmission the turbine is the only component moving into water.

Metrological Performance

The meter exceeds the requirements for EEC Class B approval when used in horizontal position, offering Class A performance in all other mounting positions. Excellent accuracy also at low flow rate proven by a low starting flow value.

Main Features

• Special material bearings
• Excellent reliability
• Compact design
• 8 rollers register 360° rotating for aneasy reading
• Filter inserted in the inlet pipe
• Cold and Warm water versions
• Pre-equipped for remote reading

Optional Features

• Non return valve inserted in the outlet
• Customized marking

Standard Compliance

• EEC directives 75/33 - 79/830
• ISO 4064
• OIML R49 provisionsCommunicating Device

The Register

The register was completely re-designed for this special application, with the result of improving the reliability of the metrological performance and having an output for advanced remote reading.

Detection Working Principle

It is based on the reflecting capacity of the pointer disk assembled on top of one register wheel.

Once the module is applied, the count ofthe meter is transferred over the disk to  the electronics and conveyed by cable orby M-Bus.

Advantages

Clear advantages derive from Opto-Electronic technology:

• Most modern, neither magnets nor reed-switch
• Safe results through electronic transmission so to avoid data manipulation
• Detection of flow direction with compensation of counting backwards
• IP65 protection also suitable forinstallation under wet conditions
• Basic register without extra investmentsat the beginning
• All the meters are pre-equipped forfurther remote reading application.

Standard remote reading system for water and heat meters for easy reading without entering the appartment.

Comfortable PC software to organize M-BUS projects and readings.

Advanced features to assist maintenance of the installed base or to control and monitor installation.

To collect and visualize meter data and to provide an interface to PCs or modems for remote reading, a concentrator is required within the M-BUS network.

The concentrator is equipped with a microprocessor CPU, a keyboard as well as an LC display and serial RS 232 interfaces for PC- and modem-connection.

Meter reading can be done directly at the display, locally by the serial RS 232 interface or remotely with an external modem.

Case Study : Water Meters

Client:

Landlord of large building in the Inner City of Johannesburg

328 flats converted from hotel rooms

Client Profile

The Landlord renovated his building which was previously a hotel in which no water meter, and all pipes, and hot and cold ring mains supplying individual flats were concealed in inaccessible blind ducts.

Business Problem Statement

With the conversion to individualised rented units it became necessary to measure both hot and cold water consumption for each flat.

Technical Situation

Building:

Apartments:

328

Solution

Two options were available:

Option 1

Traditional manual meter reading with conventional water meters. This proves to be a very costly exercise as water meters would have to be installed in the passage ways with connecting pipes to the internal ducts. In addition these meters would also have to be read manually on a monthly basis which could lead to inaccurate readings and billing problems.

Option 2

Landlord opted for an automated meter reading system (AMR) using wired M-Bus hot and cold water meters with centralised M-Bus master readers. In total 656 meters were installed and connected to three master readers.

Benefits of the Chosen Solution

The meters are read on a monthly basis or instantaneously using a computer in the management office. The total savings to the landlord were in excess of R2 million over a traditional metering method. In addition he does not have the monthly meter reading fees to pay to a metering company and the inaccuracies associated therewith.
